Training Courses
The Federation decided in 2012 that the authenticity of the event and the value received would be enhanced by offering reenactors a chance to learn more about their overall impressions. Toward that end, the Bulge will offer a two day (Friday/Saturday) tactical every other year, and in the alternating years, offer a Friday Training/Saturday Tactical arrangement.
2014 will be a Friday Training year. The Axis and Allied Commanders are charged with developing a curriculum for their respective armies. On August 26, Axis Command asked company commanders for recommendations on courses and instructors. Many companies already have training programs covering a wide variety of subjects "on the shelf", and some of these may be candidates.
Our current concept is to offer at least an hour of training in the morning and an hour in the afternoon. This will most likely be a mix of classroom and outdoor instruction. Soldaten would likely have a choice of courses, i.e., "there are three morning classes being offered, attend the one of most interest to you."
Attendance is not mandatory but obviously strongly encouraged.
Course Options At This Time:
The curriculum has not been finalized, but we already have three courses and instructors who have committed to offering a class; we will publish a final curriculum when we know which buildings will be available.
Land Navigation
Instructor: Joe Lombardo
Description: Modern US Army land navigation course. This version has been chosen for its simplicity and practicality in application, and also because it will allow us to coordinate better with the Allies for the purposes of a reenactment.
Motorized Reconnaisance
Instructor: Artur Weber
Description: Focused primarily on the use of the motorcycle, it will include among many items, the issuance of a license, maintenance, passenger embarking/disembarking, how, what, when and where of providing actionable intelligence to commanders. ALL motorized recon units are encouraged to attend.
Use of the Grenade
Instructor: Rich Moran
Description: The German tactical use of the grenade at the squad level.
Unterführerschule/Junkerschule
Instructor: Drew Maynard
Description: Part I: Basic /Advanced: In depth look at military courtesy, saluting, formations. Uniforms and accoutrements of the German soldier and how to wear them, modes of dress, culture, behaviour in and out of the Kaserne. Course open to all ranks, from Enlisted, through Officer.
Appel (Formation)
Instructor: Bryan Demory
Description: The purpose of the formation, how to set it up and conduct it, along with "live" practice. Appropriate for newer reenactors or anyone needing a refresher.
Winterkampf Survival
Instructor: Peter Gentry
Description: techniques for cold weather survival based on the original German cold weather training developed after the first winter campaign.
Practical Small Unit Tactics Part 1
Instructor: Dietrich Steiger
Description: The Wehrmacht was renowned for regularly matching superior enemy numbers in the field due in no small part to their brilliant use of infantry tactics. By understanding and implementing their tactics, modified only slightly for practical application in reenactments, we will be infinitely more effective in the field and have a better time of it.
